JUNK Creative director Brian Roettinger opens his latest exhibition 8 Announcements, May 8th at HVW8 Gallery in Los Angeles.
Creative license and the boundaries of originality have long been a point of contention with artists and musicians. One need only Google Marcel Duchamp or R. Mutt, his nom de plume, to witness just one piece in a long oeuvre of work he created to champion the idea of what can be considered art. Duchamp’s famously signed ‘Fountain’, a “readymade” bathroom urinal, was unveiled almost 100 years ago, in 1917, at the Society of Independent Artists.
For 8 Announcements, Roettinger has painstakingly re-appropriated seven artist announcements, bringing to question the roll announcements have in the current landscape of digital media.
Lucy Watling stated in 2012: “… [Kippenberger’s] posters share with his more conventional artworks the desire to undermine the accepted structures of the art world by defying attempts to understand his artistic output as a whole, by blatantly embracing collaboration, and by actively involving himself in the promotion and reception of his work.”
