My little sister in a green dinosaur Halloween costume, I was around 10.

My family pictures are more spontaneous than my commissioned photography, and the pictures are often determined by my child's mood. If my eldest daughter, who's my favourite person to take pictures of, is feeling temperamental I can't do much about it, I have to follow her vibe. This makes the process feel more honest. I’m not trying to disarm and charm anyone.

My latest project The Stairwell is a series of pictures of naked strangers and friends all shot outside my front door in my apartment block stairwell. I asked them to strip down in a place that falls somewhere between the safety of a home environment and a public space. I wanted the approach of photographing them to be as honest as possible, more akin to portraiture than fashion. They were all shot on film and haven’t been retouched. The poses try to avoid sexualization of their bodies. There’s an innocence in these naked adults when we look at them. The stairwell portraits are juxtaposed with landscapes I took in Germany's Black Forest, (the setting of many of the Brother’s Grimm cautionary fairy tales), along with pictures I took during my own adolescence, that I reworked by photographing and cropping into my old contact sheets. I wanted to create friction within the narrative through the different images in this project.
